Welcome to Next American Vanguard! A scrumptious breakfast will be served to start the day and welcome packets will be distributed. Next American City Editor Diana Lind welcomes Vanguard attendees. Please note that we will host a liveblog throughout the event, which will serve as an online voice throughout the conference. We encourage all attendees to share their experiences.

9:00 — 11:40 AM
Introductions

Vanguard attendees will each give a three-minute presentation. Spend the first two minutes briefly sharing a bit about yourself and your work — we encourage you to keep it simple and entertaining. During the last minute, Next American City will ask you a “bonus” question related to your geographical area. We have created three categories of questions — sustainability and green issues, urban economy and creating jobs and investing in your city — so be prepared to tackle an important issue in one of the areas! Presentations will be videotaped for online clips to be posted on americancity.org.

2:15 — 3:15 PM
Breakout Sessions

Each attendee will be selected to join one of three breakout sessions moderated by experts in those fields.

  1. Transportation: Getting Everyone on Board Public Transportation — Expert Arthur Guzzetti, vice president of policy at the American Public Transportation Association
  2. Civic Engagement: How Organizations Can Influence Government — Expert Jennifer Leonard, National Vacant Properties campaign director, Smart Growth America
  3. Land Use: How Development Shapes our Cities — Expert Jess Zimbabwe, executive director of the Rose Center for Public Leadership in Land Use

3:30 — 4:00 PM
Closing Remarks

We will kick off the closing session with a summary of the breakout session discussions. One person from each group will present a brief overview of the discussion in their group and share concrete solutions for moving forward.

Smarter Cities
Paul McRandle, senior editor, and Kris French, project manager, will provide an overview of Smarter Cities, a project under the auspices of the Natural Resources Defense Council that highlights the progress U.S. cities are making towards healthier living conditions, greater environmental responsibility and more vital, inclusive communities.

4:00 PM — 5:00 PM
Next American Vanguard Manifesto

As we learn from the conversations of the day, we want to put our thoughts together by creating a live document of 15 goals geared toward making our cities better. This manifesto will be created collectively by our attendees and will be taken back as a concrete agenda for the next year. Vanguard attendees will be encouraged to make significant progress toward at least three of these goals over the course of the next year. When we meet again in 2010, our attendees will be asked to report back on their progress.
