Thank you for joining Next American City in Boston for the second of our Urbanexus series! We loved coming up to Boston this winter and taking in all the city had to offer. Over two days, we met with over 100 new friends as we engaged in conversations covering everything from the options for affordable housing in Boston’s desirable neighborhoods to the future funding of public art in a city home to several talented artists.
On January 21, we kicked off the Boston Urbanexus series with a lecture by Angus Jennings, principal planner at Concord Square Planning & Development. Angus addressed the current affordable housing shortage in Boston’s priced-out neighborhoods and offered his own tried and tested solution: smart growth zoning. With 50 attendees hanging on to every word, Angus gave attendees a breakdown of the history of smart growth zoning and the potential for future housing development in this and many other cities across the country.
The next night, on January 22, Next American City and 75 guests enjoyed food, drinks and great conversation at the Mills Gallery at the Boston Center for the Arts. The salon, which featured a conversation on the physical and financial challenges in creating urban art in Boston, brought out the likes of Janet Echelman, Sarah Hutt and Ricardo Barreto, to name a few. Attendees learned about the history of urban art in Boston, the financial woes the city faces and most importantly, how artists are continuing to thrive as they look toward the future.
