Fall 2006
In our twelfth issue, TNAC explores a surprisingly volatile urban topic-preservation. While historic preservation battles may begin as local skirmishes over the fate of old buildings, they can quickly draw in activists, high-profile politicians, and the national media. Joseph Heathcott, a professor at St. Louis University, tells the tale of the Century Building, a late-19th century office tower in downtown St. Louis that was torn down in 2004 to make way for a parking lot. The plan was endorsed not only by downtown boosters, but by an esteemed preservation group, the National Trust. Jeffrey Chusid, a former Austinite, tells of an ongoing preservation battle in East Austin that pits one progressive group against another as the neighborhood struggles to understand the forces behind gentrification.
