Pedaling Revolution: How Cyclists Are Changing American Cities

By any measurement, bicycling in the United States is a niche enterprise. The $6 billion U.S. bike industry is comparable in size, roughly, to the U.S. hosiery industry. American automakers spend more on their advertising budgets than Americans spend on bicycles. In the most bike-oriented American cities, most notably Portland, Ore., 5 percent of trips are taken by bike, meaning that 95 percent are not. And Portland’s bike share is five times the national average.
