The Map as Art: Contemporary Artists Explore Cartography

Making a map was once an arduous undertaking, but nowadays we’re able to create — or conjure — one in seconds on a GPS or computer screen. Ptolemy created the earliest known world maps in ancient Greece. Maps that followed in later centuries were utilitarian, for facilitating trade and military endeavors. Yet in contemporary times, maps, like all other institutional creations, have become more self-serving. Their tangents might not always be well traveled, but their routes are scenic nonetheless.
