Food Not Lawns

Heather Coburn Flores, author of Food Not Lawns: How to Turn Your Yard Into a Garden and Your Neighborhood Into a Community (Chelsea Green, 2006), is a writer, teacher, artist and organic landscape designer. After many years distributing free vegetarian meals on the streets of Eugene, Ore., she decided to go one step further and grow the food she served people. She began planting seeds in vacant lots, tearing up lawns and educating her community about the ecological, economical, health and social benefits of growing their own food. The idea spread like a weed, and now Food Not Lawns is a full-fledged international movement.
