Internships

Interested in using Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, getting published on the web every other day, getting published in a national magazine, managing events in New Orleans, San Francisco and other cities, networking in Philadelphia, working in a quasi-swanky office, sitting in on production meetings, developing marketing and ad campaigns, fact checking, copy editing, getting freelance help and bylines in a national magazine and major dailies? We have an internship for you.

Next American City’s internship program runs each summer (May-Aug), fall (Sept-Dec) and winter (Jan-Apr). Internships are part-time (15-20 hrs/week) and unpaid. We do help arrange for course credit and provide travel honorariums for interns in the program. Full internship descriptions are posted here whenever they are available to be filled. Events and PR Internship

This is an opportunity for an eager marketing/PR student to jump headfirst into the world of magazines and event planning. You will assist the associate publisher in event research, event organization including planning logistics, managing contracts and assisting at events, negotiating partnerships, maintaining a publicity log, researching networking and magazine distribution opportunities, writing copy for press releases, e-monthly newsletter and other marketing projects, and promoting the magazine to the national audience. Required skills: independent thinker, efficient multi-tasker, strong organizational skills and a people person. Must possess strong written and oral communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office a must. Web Internship

Our web editing interns will work collaboratively with all staff to ensure that our website and online campaigns are fresh, interesting, and accurately convey the true voice and tone of Next American City magazine. Duties include: Coordinating web content, e-mail campaigns, and e-newsletters for our magazine, multi-media projects and events. Updating, revising, expanding, or tweaking existing content; creating scripts, revising html templates, developing original content, and online project management. Required skills: An understanding of the one-to-one nature of the Web, excellent oral and written communication, a proven ability to work collaboratively and to multi-task. Project management, editing skills and experience with code essential. Art and Design Internship

This is an excellent chance to develop your design portfolio while working with a young, progressive national magazine. Duties include: image research, illustration, data collection and management, designing marketing materials and collateral for print and the web, general administrative tasks as required. Required skills: strong grasp of visual communication, highly developed organization skills, proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Adobe Creative Suite; professionalism in collaborating with others both inside and outside of the office; organizational and coordination skills including the ability to multi-task is essential. The ability to work in a deadline-driven environment is a must. Experience in print and web design necessary. Marketing and Advertising Internship

This is an excellent opportunity to get hands on experience with communications management and earn ad sales commissions at a progressive magazine with a growing audience. Specific responsibilities include: sales, sales research, coordination and updating of media kits, copy writing for marketing materials, responding to general inquiries and other administrative duties (copying, filing, etc.) as required. Required skills: Excellent oral and written communication, ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize projects and execute tasks to deadline. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Adobe Creative Suite. Professionalism in collaborating with others – both inside and outside of the office. Knowledge of online ad sales environment a plus as is an active interest in media and urban issues. Editorial Internship

Interns will work directly with the Editor to assist with all aspects of producing daily online content and our quarterly print magazine. Varied interests encouraged, though specific interests in news, urban issues, redevelopment, and city planning strongly preferred. Duties include: Writing, editing, fact-checking, research, blogging and general administrative tasks as required. Required skills: excellent oral and written communication; basic research (i.e. Lexis-Nexis, etc); proficiency in Word, Excel; experience in Creative Suite not necessary, but helpful.
