Internships
Next American City seeks Interns in Editorial, Web, Marketing & Sales, Design, Layout & Production, Administration.
Interested in using Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, getting published on the web every other day, getting published in a national magazine, managing events in New Orleans, San Francisco and other cities, networking in Philadelphia, working in a quasi-swanky office, sitting in on production meetings, developing marketing and ad campaigns, fact checking, copy editing, getting freelance help and bylines in a national magazine and major dailies? We have an internship for you.

Marketing and Sales Internship
This is an excellent opportunity to get hands on experience with communications management, advertising sales, online and print marketing, events and sponsorships at a progressive national magazine with a growing audience. Duties include: Assisting in writing press materials, managing marketing campaigns, planning events and sponsorships, client research, ad sales, campaign management and general administrative tasks as required. Required skills: Excellent oral and written communication, ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize projects and execute tasks to deadline. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Adobe Creative Suite and web updating/code necessary. Professionalism in collaborating with others – both inside and outside of the office. Knowledge of online ad sales environment a plus, as is an active interest in media and urban issues.
Web Internship
Our web editing interns will work collaboratively with all staff to ensure that our website and online campaigns are fresh, interesting, and accurately convey the true voice and tone of Next American City magazine. Duties include: Coordinating web content, e-mail campaigns, and e-newsletters for our magazine, multi-media projects and events. Updating, revising, expanding, or tweaking existing content; creating scripts, revising html templates, developing original content, and online project management. Required skills: An understanding of the one-to-one nature of the Web, excellent oral and written communication, a proven ability to work collaboratively and to multi-task. Project management, editing skills and experience with code essential.
Design, Layout and Production Internship
This is an excellent chance to develop your design portfolio while working with a young, progressive national magazine. Duties include: image research, illustration, data collection and management, designing marketing materials and collateral for print and the web, general administrative tasks as required. Required skills: strong grasp of visual communication, highly developed organization skills, proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Adobe Creative Suite; professionalism in collaborating with others both inside and outside of the office; organizational and coordination skills including the ability to multi-task is essential. The ability to work in a deadline-driven environment is a must. Experience in print and web design necessary.
Adminstrative and Publishing Internship
Chosen candidate will have a great opportunity to learn the ropes of magazine and non-profit management at a young, fresh publication. You will assist the Publisher with circulation, administration and carrying out the business of the magazine. Duties include: Day-to-day management of subscriber information, including data entry, generating reports, general maintenance and backup; coordinating office print and email mailings, answering phones, filing, faxing, assisting with ordering and order processing, scheduling, and other general assistance as required. Required skills: Must be a fast learner, self-starter and detail-oriented. Must also possess excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) is absolutely essential. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite an asset.
Editorial Internship
Interns will work directly with the Editor to assist with all aspects of producing daily online content and our quarterly print magazine. Varied interests encouraged, though specific interests in news, urban issues, redevelopment, and city planning strongly preferred. Duties include: Writing, editing, fact-checking, research, blogging and general administrative tasks as required. Required skills: excellent oral and written communication; basic research (i.e. Lexis-Nexis, etc); proficiency in Word, Excel; experience in Creative Suite not necessary, but helpful.
