Last week, I went out for a morning run in a local park. I was slowly meandering up a hill, when I saw two women and two dogs, not on leashes, ahead of me. I yelled to them that I was coming up behind them, so as not to startle them by coming up suddenly. As I passed them, the two dogs started running with me. I had an incident while driving home from work a few months ago that I need to discuss here. As I began to make a left hand turn onto my one way street, a man on a bike coming the wrong way down my street swerved to avoid my car. He yelled to me “Slow down!” followed by a comment relating my driving skills to the presence of a second X chromosome. Whenever I meet someone unfamiliar with New York City, one of the questions I am invariably asked is, “What’s a borough?” To put it simply, a borough is a county. Each borough has a Borough President, though practically it is the mayor of NYC with most executive power. Five boroughs make up the city: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island.
