“Walkin’ in L.A., nobody walks in L.A.,” sings the 80s band Missing Persons. But from the handful of times I’ve been to L.A. — including my trip two weeks ago — I can’t help but think the song is only half right. And the resurgence of great Los Angeles-area neighborhoods and cities is due to public leaders like Rick Cole, Ventura city manager, who are after the “authentic” in city design and development.

Bernd and Hilla Becher have documented their industrial surrounds since the 1960s. With the creation of monographs and typologies made from their photos, their works have created an innovative view of the dying industrial structures and the mundane things we see everyday. Their work will be on display at the Getty Center in Los Angeles until September.

Nader unloads on Obama, Clinton
Ralph Nader to the rescue. His third run at the Presidency, he told Politico, is due to the “spinelessness of the potential Democratic nominees, Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.).” He cites Obama’s “relatively mediocre” Senate record as well as Clinton being “a panderer and a flatterer.” Nader knows his chances are slim as he admits, “‘Obviously, the system is triple-rigged against any small candidate.’” His run is more a…

Manhattanville’s Architectural Tension
“Beyond the glass and steel illustrations of Columbia’s planned Manhattanville buildings is a tension between preserving the aesthetic aspects of the neighborhood and convincing local residents to embrace a modern look.Although architecture alone does not create a space, design wields powerful force in helping to sculpt not only the physical characteristics, but also the emotional and psychological mood of a neighborhood. “What the community…

There’s a lot of overlap at the margins of legality and respectability. A college kid’s fake ID lives in this zone—illegal for now, but not as sketchy as it could be given that its owner will legitimately be able to drink in a few years. But college kids aren’t the fake-ID owners law enforcement is especially worried about.
As technology continues to improve, it’s getting easier and easier for illegal immigrants to get not just fake drivers’ licenses but also fake Social Security…

Next Up for the Democrats: Civil War
“The untold story in the run-up to Super Tuesday was Hillary Clinton’s elaborate live prime-time special the night before the vote. Presiding from a studio in New York, the candidate took questions from audiences in 21 other cities. She had plugged the event four days earlier in the last gasp of her debate with Barack Obama and paid a small fortune for it: an hour of time on the Hallmark Channel plus satellite TV hookups for the assemblies of…

When a building is surrounded by cameras and lights or an entire street is blocked off for filming in L.A., you don’t really notice. At least I don’t. Not anymore. Well, I notice, but the sight is so familiar that to me and to many in Los Angeles, it is not too much different than seeing kids at the park or hardhat guys working on a road.
Witnessing something being filmed in L.A.—be it a movie, a car commercial, a TV show or a music video—is not unusual. But the fact that it just kind…

If you’re in Los Angeles, the bus is in your face. It’s on the wall, it’s on the TV, it’s on the pages of magazines and newspapers. The bus is even on the bus. A massive advertising campaign has the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority practically everywhere in L.A. But it’s not on the street where it needs to be the most.
