Anchor institutions, as they are commonly defined, are those institutions (such as universities, hospitals, churches, museums, or even some large businesses) that are tied to specific cities. They drive local economies and, ideally, provide a sense of place and pride for residents. John Reinhardt wrote this editorial about the importance of anchor institutions in the Summer of 2007 detailing the role Johns Hopkins University plays in Baltimore.

Geoff Manaugh over at BLDG BLOG takes a look at Front Row Studio’s Farmadelphia project, “their now widely known proposal for the transformation of Philadelphia, in which that city’s vacant and abandoned lots are turned into a thriving agricultural zone – complete with crops grown for local consumption and soil remediation, and with an eye toward future tourism, including surreal petting zoos, hay rides, and even corn mazes.”
The project raises interesting…

Last night, PennPraxis presented A Civic Vision for the Waterfront, to a crowd at the Pennsylvania Convention Center so large it spilled out of the 900 seat chamber and into a simulcast room. The plan for Philadelphia’s waterfront along the Delaware river was clear, well presented, and intelligent. Or was it a vision? Perhaps a vision plan?
Whether to call it a plan or a vision may seem trivial, but understanding the nuance of terms could be the difference in whether someone left…

Builders respond to the market, learn green building techniques
“While many commercial builders have been involved in green projects — that is, developments that balance style and function with protection of the environment and conservation of natural resources — residential builders have been slower to incorporate these construction features. Part of the problem was that they had scant guidance as to how, but that is changing.”
“Now, builders are receiving guidance on construction…

Congress is considering a new policy to incentivize the use of cleaner energy. It is a break from tradition, as change isn’t coming from technological advances or new fuel sources, but driven by a financial bottom line.
“Change would come from Washington, if Congress does what it has talked about and puts a price tag on greenhouse-gas emissions. Suddenly the carbon content of fuel, or how much carbon dioxide is produced per unit of energy, would be as…

Join The Next American City at the public presentation of a civic vision for seven miles of the central Delaware riverfront, led by PennPraxis at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design. The presentation represents a year-long public planning process in which over 4,000 Philadelphians worked together to imagine a bright future for Philadelphia’s original riverfront.

Happy Halloween!
Ghosts: The hot new thing in economic development
“Cities and small town nationwide have jumped on the ghost-circuit bandwagon, and thousands of ghost-hunting clubs have sprung up, turning ghost tourism into a multi-billion dollar business that thrives beyond Halloween.
Some offer overnight packages, where guests spend the night in a haunted hotel. Others allow guests to wander through haunted buildings, armed with handheld ghost-detecting meters or night-vision…

Election Coverage: Create an attractive place for immigrants, lose federal dollars?
Somebody didn’t read Pooja Shah’s article. “Republican Fred Thompson said Tuesday the government should yank federal dollars from cities and states that don’t report illegal immigrants.
In his first major policy proposal, Thompson challenged presidential rivals Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney by criticizing ``sanctuary cities’’ where city workers are barred from reporting suspected illegal immigrants…

This Way Up: New York Helps Orient Emerging Subway Riders
“It is one of those embarrassing, frustrating, infuriating experiences of everyday life that many New York subway passengers are loath to admit: that disorienting moment when they step onto the street, lost in a city they know — or think they know — perfectly well. Which way is Ninth Avenue, anyway? Now the city is experimenting with a new way to help people go where they want to go without wasting more steps than they have to.…
