With the next Democratic primary being held in Pennsylvania on Earth day, we turn our attention today to “green collar jobs.” While there is certainly no one-size-fits-all panacea for the nation’s struggling industrial cities, proponents of the movement see wide ranging benefits from creating a new economy around environmental awareness.

Last week my city came down with a fever. Symptoms include: sudden feelings of euphoria followed by a quiet, zen-like sense of anticipation; sudden boisterous gatherings of young people; throngs of people in the streets carrying signs and encouraging passing motorists to honk their horns; and long lines of voters, many voting for the first time. That’s right, Obamamania hit Milwaukee.

Nader unloads on Obama, Clinton
Ralph Nader to the rescue. His third run at the Presidency, he told Politico, is due to the “spinelessness of the potential Democratic nominees, Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.).” He cites Obama’s “relatively mediocre” Senate record as well as Clinton being “a panderer and a flatterer.” Nader knows his chances are slim as he admits, “‘Obviously, the system is triple-rigged against any small candidate.’” His run is more a…

Smart growth is an expansive issue. It is, as defined by the American Planning Association, the integration—into every aspect of planning for development—the consideration of the effects of growth on our health, environment, communities, and financial sustainability, as well as its effect on equality.
The two final Democratic candidates have certainly shown support for the principles of smart growth. They tuck it into their infrastructure, environment, energy, and poverty platforms.…

Voting gap divides the parties
“In Tuesday’s election, 73% of those who went to the polls voted in the Democratic primary, to 27% on the GOP side—a huge difference in a state that in November 2004 was decided by about 11,400 votes."To be sure, the race between Obama and Hillary Clinton was more meaningful than the all-but-wrapped up Republican battle between McCain and Mike Huckabee. And that may have served as a magnet for independents and crossover voters.”

Government “lifeline” for deliquent mortgages.
The Bush administration’s hope to counter falling house prices and rising mortgage defaults is the “Hope Alliance,” which is planning to give homeowners more breathing room to pay bills. Houston Chronicle reports: “Against a backdrop of surging defaults and administration officials’ prodding of the mortgage industry, the plan will allow seriously overdue homeowners to suspend foreclosures for 30 days while lenders try to work out more… (more)

Next Up for the Democrats: Civil War
“The untold story in the run-up to Super Tuesday was Hillary Clinton’s elaborate live prime-time special the night before the vote. Presiding from a studio in New York, the candidate took questions from audiences in 21 other cities. She had plugged the event four days earlier in the last gasp of her debate with Barack Obama and paid a small fortune for it: an hour of time on the Hallmark Channel plus satellite TV hookups for the assemblies of…

During last weekend’s Democratic debate, when CNN’s Wolf Blitzer wasn’t trying to get the two surviving candidates to spit in each other’s faces, a lot of substantive discussion took place. One of the topics mentioned, which we have yet to cover in this column, was the mortgage crisis. And although it wasn’t deliberated at much length, Hillary Clinton said her position on the issue was one of the biggest policy distinctions between her campaign and Barack Obama’s.
The major differences…

“The charges, which are being brought in United States District Court in Brooklyn and state Supreme Court in Queens, also include seven murders — three dating back more than a quarter century — along with racketeering, extortion and state gambling charges, officials said.
“The arrests by the F.B.I. and investigators from several other agencies were coordinated with a sweep that netted dozens of accused organized crime figures in Sicily. Those…

Over-25 vote gave Clinton crucial edge
“There are at least three potential explanations for the difference between the under-25 and the over-25 vote: that the nature of Clinton’s pitch to young voters had more appeal to voters in their late 20s; that 25 is about the age at which Clinton nostalgia may still kick in; and that Obama had a stronger organization on campus, while Clinton had a better field operation in the cities where young adults are most likely to live.”
“Finally, there…

To warm up, we begin with a throwback—Christopher Morris’ 2003 satirical interpretation/re-framing of President Bush’s State of the Union address:
“...this year, for the first time, we must offer every child in America three nuclear missiles.”
If that doesn’t get you ready to read about presidential primaries, we don’t know what will. So:
The Atlantic has an insider report from the Hillary camp, describing first the ”deep sense of gloom that settled over Hillaryland,” and then the…

A “Silent Crisis”, An Increase in Infrastructure Funds, A Little Fib About Broadband, and An Infrastructure Bank
The nation’s bridges, tunnels, and roads are facing a ”silent crisis,” said Hillary Clinton last August, in Rochester, New Hampshire. “It’s a crisis with the potential of not only death and injury, property loss and other kinds of dangers and inconveniences, but it is imperative that we address this crisis for our economy.”
“Not only [the] bridge collapse in Minneapolis…
