With the next Democratic primary being held in Pennsylvania on Earth day, we turn our attention today to “green collar jobs.” While there is certainly no one-size-fits-all panacea for the nation’s struggling industrial cities, proponents of the movement see wide ranging benefits from creating a new economy around environmental awareness.

Last week my city came down with a fever. Symptoms include: sudden feelings of euphoria followed by a quiet, zen-like sense of anticipation; sudden boisterous gatherings of young people; throngs of people in the streets carrying signs and encouraging passing motorists to honk their horns; and long lines of voters, many voting for the first time. That’s right, Obamamania hit Milwaukee.

Voting gap divides the parties
“In Tuesday’s election, 73% of those who went to the polls voted in the Democratic primary, to 27% on the GOP side—a huge difference in a state that in November 2004 was decided by about 11,400 votes."To be sure, the race between Obama and Hillary Clinton was more meaningful than the all-but-wrapped up Republican battle between McCain and Mike Huckabee. And that may have served as a magnet for independents and crossover voters.”

Knocking Down High Rises Stops Crime! Or not.
“OK, so, you take away two-thirds of the people of Richard Allen (and in fact, probably take away more than 2/3rds of the original residents, given many projects become mixed income), and you lose.... 2/3rds of the crime. Not to be a jerk, but doesn’t that sort of imply that, at the end of the day, as absolutely crappy and terrible as these huge projects were, crime might not have been caused by architecture, but instead by the fact that…

Here’s a fun idea for an office pool. Have everyone in your office pick a horse (news media outlet). Every time someone’s horse is the first to declare a winner in a state, that person gets a point. Winner gets free lunch on Super Wednesday.
Try to guess who is voting for who. (Answers on page 134)

State of the Union rerun: “America Faces Uncertainty”
Because of the ongoing writer’s strike, last night’s State of the Union address was a rerun, as many viewers were disappointed that American still faces “uncertainty” and that Al Queda is “on the run.” Previously unreleased footage was added to the rerun to make it appear fresh and timely. One of these clips includes an alternate ending - instead of President Bush saying that the economy is…

Survey of Presidential Candidates’ Positions on Illegal Guns Ignored
A campaign by the Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition to get presidential candidates to focus on the issue was totally ignored. The coalition, which is made up of 270 mayors and was co-founded by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, had distributed a survey to all the candidates in both major parties, asking where they stood on such issues as access to gun data, the toughening of penalties for illegal firearm…

New Hampshire: Machine vs. Paper or Urban vs. Rural?
A recount of the ballots cast in New Hampshire has been granted to Democratic candidate Dennis Kucinich and Republican candidate Albert Howard. They are raising concerns over differences in vote totals between hand counted ballots and other voting systems like electronic machines or optical scanners. Candidates like John McCain and Barack Obama received more votes in districts with paper ballots. But some have countered that this is…

To warm up, we begin with a throwback—Christopher Morris’ 2003 satirical interpretation/re-framing of President Bush’s State of the Union address:
“...this year, for the first time, we must offer every child in America three nuclear missiles.”
If that doesn’t get you ready to read about presidential primaries, we don’t know what will. So:
The Atlantic has an insider report from the Hillary camp, describing first the ”deep sense of gloom that settled over Hillaryland,” and then the…

As he stood before the National Rifle Association in September, Sen. John Mccain accused big city mayors of using gun manufacturers as a scapegoat for their inability to control crime in their cities. They “decided it was more important to blame the manufacturers of a legal product than it was to control crime in their own cities,” he scolded as he took his turn trying to woo this powerful constituency.
“Instead of increasing police patrols, instituting tough sentences for lawbreakers…

On the eve of the Brown & Black Presidential Forum in Iowa at the beginning of the month, John Edwards unveiled his urban agenda called ”Cities Rising.” The plan reframes his various platforms into an urban strategy, showcasing what he could do for American cities. Since the plan is mostly a repackaging of ideas his campaign has already proposed, issues such as trade and stem cell research work their way into it, but the general themes encompass jobs, education, affordable housing,…

As a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Ron Paul has been a cosponsor of legislation to offer tax deductions for commuters who use their bike or take public transportation to get to work. He is also cosponsor of a bill to increase and extend deductions for buildings that use less energy.
But his support for these measures is more likely about reducing the federal tax burden, rather than an attempt to cut energy use in cities and the nation. As a self-identifying…

Just got this note from City Limits. I’m writing to get your input for a story City Limits is doing about the presidential race and housing policy.
We’re trying to put together a comprehensive look at where the candidates stand on key housing policy questions. The idea is to get this out before the Iowa caucus, as a tiny antidote to the poll and personality driven coverage out there.
We’re asking housing developers, advocates, activists, residents, etc. to submit the question or… (more)

Halting illegal immigration; Encouraging legal immigration; A long (sometimes conflicting) record on the subject.
The Texas-Mexico border in the Rio Grande Valley served as the backdrop for former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani this Monday as he spoke about his plans to deal with illegal immigration. Giuliani’s goals are to secure the border, document all non-citizens coming into and out of America, and focus on deporting criminal immigrants here illegally. But while the…
