I’m shocked by every day that goes by without some pseudo-academic hipster art-star type taking the urban theory world’s reins and making the whole effort look a little sexier. Sometimes that shock turns into worry that Next American City is just a placeholder to be left in a cooler, more culture-savvy kid’s dust. Urban thought is hot and waiting patiently for someone to capitalize on it. A new post on Gen-Y blog bible Hipster Runoff indicates the process may have begun.

In his seminal book, America, Baudrillard suggests that to understand the American city: “you should begin with the screen and move outwards towards the city.” The Society for Moving Images about the Built Environment — or SMIBE — has taken that quote literally. Its latest endeavor is a first annual contest for short films. This year’s theme is “Story about a Place.” More information after the jump.

When gas was above $4 a gallon, most cities reported a rise in mass-transit ridership. Now, with gas at half the prices seen earlier this year, Americans are still taking more trips on mass transit.

With help from the NYC Streets Renaissance campaign, residents of New York’s Upper West Side have banded together to create a blueprint for redeveloping their roads. The plan represents a real chance to permanently shift street usage from automobiles to people, while employing an approach uniquely suited to deal with the challenges presented by the over-crowded city.
