Craigslist founder’s plan to rethink charity

Behold: http://www.donorschoose.org

Type keywords into the left search box to see proposals based on particular topics. Intriguing concept—give specifically to programs, classes, ideas, even specific teachers based on whether you think they could help students. Topics are very nuanced sometimes, and pretty broad at others. Poke around, let us know what you find. Do you think this is a good way to give to schools? Personally, I’d be interested to see what kinds of less-than-stereotypically-positive ideas show up on the site. It’s one thing to ask for expanded “cultural” books, it’s another to request money for a KKK library (or something—I’m exaggerating, you get the idea). Wonder what the moderation process looks like, what constitutes an acceptable idea and a not-so-acceptable idea. Et cetera.
