City roll call

The Daily Report

Parking, Tolls and Bike Boxes, Oh My!

Fort Worth’s High Cost of Free Parking

“You might think city leaders had carefully calculated how many spaces would be needed each year and made leasing decisions on that basis — but you would be wrong. In fact, the money subsidizes far more than parking — and in some cases, pays for parking spaces that don’t even exist yet.

The money comes from the downtown tax increment financing district — a TIF, as it is called — and the free parking program is the biggest outlay of a district allegedly created to provide infrastructure for a “blighted” area of the city.”

The Changing Face of SLC

“Salt Lake City’s Planning Commission tonight will weigh whether to grant conceptual approval for City Creek Center, the LDS Church’s $1 billion-plus mixed-use development planned for downtown. (And which TNAC wrote about in it’s fall issue). The commission is expected to consider a final green light for the entire project, including a Main Street sky bridge, at a later meeting, possibly as soon as Jan. 23. The ultimate approval for the sky bridge will rest with the Salt Lake City Council.”

Heavy Tolls Proposed Into Manhattan

“There would be no free rides into Manhattan - except on a bicycle - under a plan to be considered Thursday by the commission studying Mayor Bloomberg’s congestion pricing plan. The plan calls for putting $4 tolls on every free crossing into Manhattan, from the mighty Brooklyn Bridge to the tiny 145th St. Bridge over the Harlem River, raising $859 million a year for mass transit.”
