Diana Lind on Smart City Radio
At Next American City we’re busy packing our bags as we head to Milwaukee for yet another 24:HRS road trip adventure. Join us this Sept. 20-21 as our phenomenal local guides take us through the heart of the “Ill Mill” (if only every city had such a great nickname!). Over the course of 24 hours we will explore the neighborhoods, waterways, forgotten corners, local characters… everything that makes Milwaukee, well, Milwaukee. It’s urban exploration in Wisconsin’s finest county, my friends.
Listen to Diana Lind talk about this trip here.

Twenty-one years in Milwaukee, and I never once heard anyone call it the Ill Mill. Cream City, Brew City, Brewtown, Mil-Town, City of Festivals, Mill-ee-wau-kay, The 414, MKE…but the Ill Mill?? That’s just silly. Would you call it the Illy Philly?
Looking forward to this event, though! :-D

I’ve been in Milwaukee 21 years as well. This is the very first time I’ve heard the “Ill Mill” too. Of the names that Brendan gave, I most often hear Cream City, Brew City, Mil-Town, and the Festival City. Another common one is The Genuine American City. I’ve also hear some more obscure ones like Hog-ville (referring to Harley Owners) and Birthplace of the Tyme Machine (referring to locals habit of calling ATM/cash machines as Tyme Machines.) I’m really curious to find out where NAC got the term from. Is that what Chicagoan’s call us? I’m fine with that because we have a habit of calling them FIBs. I’m not going to expand on that.
Looking forward to Saturday. I hope more info comes out soon.
